Kirby Original settler: Thomas J. Kirby Contact: Patricia Oliver patriciaaoliver48@yahoo.com According to the National Archives in Washington D.C. Thomas J Kirby lived there from about 1835 to 1867. Family came over from Virginia. Thomas married Lydia Berkley on Feb 15th 1849 in her fathers home. That is documented under marriage records in Gallia County. Thomas worked as a blacksmith in Rodney. Lydia lived in Addamsville. Thoams also worked at Gallia Furnance, and in places in Jackson and Scioto county. Present at their marriage was her father Thomas Berkley (who she lived with, mother passed away). Also present was William Kirby married to Lydia's sister, Lucy, married in June 1845 also documented in records, Lydia Ann Kirby wife of Issac Green and Lydia' sister Amanda. Thomas was in the Civil War, he enlisted they lived at Gallia Furnance. He is buried at Leavenworth National Cemetery. He died in the Old Soliders Home. It is believed that they and a third brother named George ( who resided in Indiana) were born in Virginia to Thomas Land (who died abt. 1810). After migrating to Ohio Lewis was a justice of peace in Gallia County for a time and died 1 Feb 1844. After marrying in Gallia County in 1825, Elijah resided in Milton Twp. of Jackson County with three sons under age of 5 yrs according to 1830 census. My gggrandfather, John Lewis Land, is believed to be a fourth son born 29 Jun 1831 in Jackson County who was married tiwce, lived in NE, MO and IA and raised a family of twelve. I am still seeking proof that Elijah is his father. Samuel lived in Columbiana County as a young man, marrying Susan. In addition to being a minister, he was also a carpenter. 1860 census shows them living in Springfield Township in Gallia County. Susan died between 1861-1862. Samuel then married her sister, Mary Virginia Smith. The family moved to Jackson County, Ohio in 1870 and then moved to Missouri in 1880. Samuel was the son of Jacob and Ann Bradfield Malone. Smith Original settler: Solomon Smith Solomon was born 1786 in Maryland, married Catherine Hartsook Jan. 12, 1812 in Augusta Co. Virginia. It's claimed the Hartsooks came to Gallia Co. following the death of their father in 1817, exact date unknown. In 1820 Solomon is living next to his brother in law Jacob Hartsook. Solomon's known children were Sarah Burlile, George W., Elizabeth Hale, Mary Rupe, & Christina. There are at least 2 more unknown sons. Solomon's wife Catherine died shortly after 1840, no info on her death. He married Christina Lewis, a widow, on Sept. 10, 1846. Each had a daughter marry that day in a triple wedding. He last appeared in the 1860 census in Gallia Co., date of death unknown. William married Emma Keeler. Their second son, Charles Williams (1872) married Mary Etta Rowley. Two more sons, Edward and Perry are listed on the 1880 census but I have no other information. Minnie Williams (1880) married John McCann in Ross County, Ohio. Eva Williams (1884) married Frank Acord in Ross County. Any information on these indidivuals would be most appreciated.
