Obituary: Died, January 4th, 1880, of Bright's disease, Dr James Barton, aged about 58 years. Dr Barton was born in Meigs County, Ohio; received his education at Albany, Athens County; studied medicine with Dr Dixon, of the same place. Shortly after finishing his studies, married Miss Angeline Reeves, of Athens County, who was a most Amiable and worthy lady and genial companion; and shared his joys and troubles up to within three months of his death, when that fell monster, consumption, claimed her for his victim. Soon after marriage they removed to the village of Addison, in this county, where he commenced the practice of medicine, and continued to practice up to the time of his death. His wide-spread renown and success as a physician gathered for him a large practice, which he attended to until a short time previous to his demise. He made no profession of religion, but his kind and charitable deeds were known by all that knew him. Where sickness, suffering, distress and poverty were, we always found him, willing and ready to extend a helping hand and words of comfort. In politics he was an uncompromising Democrat, always ready to perform any task assigned him by his party for the advancement of the cause. In his loss the Democracy have lost an energetic worker, society one of its best members, medicine one of its best practitioners, and his family a most kind and indulgent parent. We feel to mourn the loss of one so useful, kind and benevolent. When tossed upon a feverish bed of sickness we'll miss his skill as a physician and kind words of comfort. Farewell, Dr Barton, those that knew you best loved you most. ASB [Middleport Herald please copy.]

Midwifery: it is recorded that women have helped other women in childbirth since Colonial times. In 1716, New York City was the first place in the U.S. to require licensing of midwives. Male physicians began spreading rumors that women who came to hospitals and allowed the male physician to deliver their babies were more intelligent and of a higher social class. They said that fewer babies and women died in child birth this way, even though, the opposite was true. [95% of women who used a midwife at home had no problems compared to the higher death rate when delivering in hospitals.] In 1894, the first cesarean section was performed in Boston, Mass.
